Walter Eugene Duncan

Walter E. “Dub” Duncan was born October 19, 1924 in Fort Worth, Texas to Roy Franklin Duncan and Frances Janie Smith Duncan. He left this earth to join the presence of God on September 25, 2018.

Spending the majority of his life in North Fort Worth, he attended several elementary schools, J.P Elder Junior High, and North Side High School. He proved to be both a great friend and gifted scholar.

As war loomed in Europe, he was drafted into the United States Army. After months of training, he was shipped to England to prepare for something that he knew was going to be big! He and his fellow 4th Infantry Division boarded boats, along with an armada of Allied Troops to embark on one of the most amazing military feats in history. Two hours after H-Hour, he landed on Utah Beach on D-Day, behind the first wave of paratroopers. In total he had eleven months in combat with a tank crew, earning him all the battle stars for the major battles of the European Theatre. He fought under such generals as Courtney Hodges, George Patton and others. He and his comrades were among the first American soldiers to liberate Paris. The French were so thankful that the Americans were there, they lined the streets. Dub said he kissed more women and babies that day than he had in his whole life. Honorably discharged, he received a Bronze Star for meritorious service.

On January 20, 1946, he returned to Fort Worth. On January 26, he married Norma Joyce Pulliam (according to him, “the prettiest girl he had ever seen”). They celebrated 72 years of marriage. Exactly six years to the day after he returned home, they became the parents of a daughter, Dana Karen Duncan. Twenty months later, added a son, Richard (Rick) Eugene Duncan to the family.

Over the years, Dub spent most of his professional career as a VP and Manager of United States Cold Storage. After retiring, he and Norma relocated to Granbury Texas.

Accepting Jesus Christ as his Savior at a young age, he realized at 90 years old that he had never been baptized. In 2014, he was baptized along with his great grandson. Prior to that he served as an ordained deacon at both Rosen Heights Baptist and Acton Baptist churches.

Walter was an avid golfer. He played golf every Saturday up into his eighties. When he was young, he caddied at Rockwood Golf Course. He helped a blind golfer around the course, lining him up to swing in the right direction. One day he actually saw that man make a hole-in-one! In 1972, he was the Club Champion at Diamond Oaks Country Club and after retirement, he played regularly at De Cordova Bend Country Club, where he was one of the most well-respected golfers there for his skill and his fairness.

Besides his love for Norma, Dana and husband Barry, Rick and wife Lourdes, his later years were brightened by his grandson, Corey McConnell and wife Kari, granddaughter Courtney McConnell Saxton and husband Sam, and granddaughters Nicole Duncan Clifton and husband Trey, and Natalie Duncan Gooch and husband Carson. He thought he was totally in love with his grands until he was blessed with great grandchildren: Mason and Maddyn McConnell, Tenley and Trenten Saxton, Evan Clifton, and Collins Gooch. Nothing brought a smile to his face like a hug from them.

Blessed to have had him for over 93 years!
