Steven M. Mowrer June 4, 1942 – August 10, 2023

Steven M. Mowrer, 81, flew to heavenly eternity on Thursday night, August 10, at home in Mansfield, Texas, surrounded by his family’s enduring love, after battling numerous long-term health challenges. Through it all, he did life his way. He will be forever missed and held close at heart by so many who cherished him.

Steve was born on June 4, 1942, in Huntington, Ind. Growing up, he enjoyed life amidst the rolling hills and scenic seasons of Huntington and spending time at the lake with his family. He graduated from Huntington High School and attended Indiana University in Bloomington, Ind., where he received a bachelor’s in management and administration. He was a Beta Theta Pi fraternity member and loved sharing stories of his collegiate sports experiences which included football and cycling in the Little 500. Steve was a proud Hoosier through and through.

He found his “happily ever after” when he married his hazel-eyed sweetheart, Billie Jean, on June 1, 1974, in Littlefield, Texas. They had just celebrated their 49th wedding anniversary this year and were looking forward to their golden anniversary next year.

While Steve loved true crime stories and secretly dreamed of being “connected,” he never owned a gun and, thankfully, embarked upon a more civilized career path.

His professional career was long and storied, full of tremendous hard work and dedication, successes large and small, and lifelong relationships. After 23 years at Sears, Roebuck and Company, where he helped launch the iconic Discover credit card, he then spent another 20 years at Pier 1 Imports in Fort Worth where, as senior vice president of credit, he oversaw development of the Pier 1 credit card. After unveiling the credit card, he gave his wife, Billie, the honor of being the very first Pier 1 customer to shop with the new credit card. Additionally, he earned countless awards and sat on boards of numerous organizations including Cancer Care Services, Merchants Research Council (MRC), Consumer Credit Counseling Services (CCCS), and many more.

When not working, Steve could be found bowling, playing cards, or hitting the links. He never quite realized his dream of the elusive hole in one, but he was a member of bowling’s esteemed 299 club. Over the years, he also enjoyed coaching his children’s sports teams, sipping Panda Express passion tea, and listening to a wide variety of music. It was not uncommon to find him singing or dancing in the car, at the dinner table, or to grandkids.

At home and at work, Steve was known for his trademark dry sense of humor, kind and generous spirit, and abundant love and pride for his family. His respect for others, loyalty, work ethic, and love of family are values that his children carry forward. Above all, he understood that timeless family ties were built upon unconditional love – a sentiment embraced and honored by his loved ones.

Steve is survived by his loving wife, Billie, and their four children: Rachael (spouse Mike), A.J., Jake (spouse Jennifer), and Jessie Jane; grandchildren: Austin, Evan, Drew, Ainsley, Dylan, Zach, Mike, and Ryker; brother Fred Mowrer Jr. (spouse Lisa Ann), sister Lisa Louise Ortiz (spouse Michael), and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, the Honorable Frederick Martin “Fritz” and Evelyn Jane Mowrer of Albuquerque, New Mexico.

Per his wishes, he will be cremated, and the family will hold a private Celebration of Life service at Blessing Funeral Home at a later date. In lieu of flowers, please consider donating in Steve’s honor to Cancer Care Services in Fort Worth at https://cancercareservices.org/ .

We treasured our time with you and love you now and always, Dad/“Teebee.” Your wit, wisdom, and presence will be dearly missed, but your love will always be felt. May God bless you and grant you eternal peace as you soar with the angels, free at last.
