MANSFIELD -- Dr. Percy Lee "Doc" Cook passed away July 12, 2012 at his home in Mansfield. Service: 10 a.m. Monday at Walnut Ridge Baptist Church, 1201 SH 360, Mansfield. Visitation: 4 to 6 p.m., on Sunday at Blessing Funeral Home. Dr. Cook was born on December 14, 1921 in Eustace. He was the son of Joseph Lawrence and Minnie Lee Wortham Cook. Percy Lee worked on the family farm with his parents and siblings. When he decided to attend college he left for East Texas State Teachers College in Commerce. While attending East Texas State, he met and married the love of his life, Avena Sutton. They fell in love and married just before he entered the Army. Dr. Cook served as a medic with the Medical Detachment of the 265th Combat Engineer Battalion 65th Infantry. After returning from military service he attended and graduated from Sam Houston State Teachers College. He taught school and coached basketball until he entered Baylor Medical School in Houston. Upon graduation and completion of his medical internship at John Peter Smith Hospital, he opened his practice in Mansfield. As an entrepreneur, he successfully built and managed Cedars Hospital. He was active in the industrial, commercial and residential development of Mansfield. He has served the local community for over fifty years. To those who know and love him he is "Doc". He was an active hunter and passed this love of nature on to his grandchildren and great grandchildren. He was an avid fisherman if they were biting! Dr. Cook is preceded in death by his sisters, Addrain Powers and Jane Hutchinson and brother Edward Lawrence Cook. Survivors: He is survived by his loving wife of 70 years, Avena Sutton Cook. He also leaves his brother Flin Cook and his wife, Dorothy, of Houghton, Louisiana and Judy Hataway and husband, Joe, of Allen. He is also survived by his children, Miles Lee Cook and wife, Rita, of Pampa, Cindy Cook Hartman and husband, Steve, of Katy and Carol Cook Cooper and husband, Melvin, of Mansfield; grandchildren, Miles Shannon Cook, Kimberlee Hartman Heidmann, Sean Ashley Cook, Jeannie Cooper Harper, Steven Wade Hartman, Krista Hartman Rodriguez and Douglas Sutton Cooper. Doc was proud to also have eight great-grandchildren.
