Myra “Polly” Virginia Groce Ballweg, a loving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and great-great-grandmother, passed away Wednesday October 15, 2014 at the age of 100 years in Mansfield, Texas.
Polly was born August 12, 1914, in the Grace Chapel community (which would later become Southeast Arlington) to Otis and Bettie Swaim Groce. She worked for many years at the Arlington State College (later the University of Texas at Arlington) in the College Bookstore until her retirement in 1979. After she retired she began art lessons at the Mansfield Art Club and became a prolific painter which can be attested to by her children and grandchildren who have many of her paintings.
She was a wonderful cook and enjoyed preparing holiday meals for her children and their families. She was also a great seamstress and was not afraid to tackle any project. She enjoyed working in her yard (winning yard of the month once) and continued to do so until she was 95.
At that time she moved to Walnut Creek Assisted Living and Memory Care, for which her children would like to thank them for their kindness and support.
She was a talented lady and will be greatly missed by her family and friends.
Polly was preceded in death by her husband of 55 years, Phillip S. Ballweg, parents, Otis and Bettie Groce; one son, William B. Ashcraft; her brother, Lloyd (Pete) Groce; and her sister, Lou (Cutie) Swafford, and grandson James R. Ashcraft, Jr.
Survivors include her daughter, Bettie L. Blair and husband Rayburn of Mansfield; son, James R. Ashcraft and wife Sue of Arlington; and son, Robert S. Ashcraft and wife Gerry of Mansfield; sisters-in-law, Pat Gazewood of Arlington and Martha Dumond and husband Joe of Dexter, New Mexico. She also leaves a legacy of 16 grandchildren, 68 great grandchildren, and 10 great-great-grandchildren; many nephews, nieces, step-nephews and nieces.
