Mary Dungan

MANSFIELD -- Frankie Dungan, 69, passed away Sunday morning, June 9, 2013.        Funeral Mass: 10 a.m. Friday at St. Jude Catholic Church, 500 E. Dallas St., Mansfield, followed by a ceremony at her final resting place at Skyvue Memorial Gardens in Mansfield. Formal visitation: 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday with rosary at Blessing Funeral Home, 401 Elm St., Mansfield.        Memorials: In lieu of flowers, any expressions of love for Frankie may be made in donations to St. Jude New Building Fund, 500 E Dallas St., Mansfield, Texas 76063.        Frankie was born Dec. 10, 1943, in Pittsburgh, Pa. Her family moved to El Paso in 1947 where she lived until 1995 when she and her husband, David, moved to Mansfield. Frankie received her B.A. and M.Ed. degrees from the University of Texas-El Paso and from 1970 to 1995 she taught in El Paso as a teacher, Title 1 reading supervisor, curriculum supervisor and assistant principal and adjunct professor at UTEP. During this time she distinguished herself with many honors and awards, including Teacher of the Year, a Fellow in the West Texas Writing Project and president of the Texas State Reading Association.        After moving to the Metroplex, Frankie remained active as an educator, teaching reading and language arts courses in the Department of Teacher Education at UT-Arlington. As an educational consultant, she also presented at numerous conferences and workshops throughout the country. She served on the author team for the McGraw Hill Reading programs, Scholastic and Newbridge Publishers and Voyager Learning.        Since retiring in 2009, Frankie concentrated on the things she loved the most; her family (with special attention to her grandchildren), taking golfing vacations with her husband or just relaxing on the deck with a good book and a good glass of wine.        Everybody that met Frankie knew they were in the presence of a very special person. There have been literally thousands of former students who have benefited from her mentoring.        Likewise, in her personal life she had a positive and lasting impact on almost everyone she met. She had a unique and special gift that drew everyone into a place of warmth, comfort and happiness. She was everyone's best friend.        She was a member of St. Jude Catholic Church. Also as a member of Walnut Creek Country Club, she was active with the Ladies Golf Association and Book Club.        The family would like to thank the nursing staff at Baylor All Saints Hospital in Fort Worth for their compassionate care given to Frankie during her lengthy stay.        Frankie was preceded in death by father and mother, John and Audrey Vollmer, and brothers, Richard and Robert Vollmer.        Survivors: Husband, David Dungan; daughters, Sandy Burgoyne and husband, Nick, of New Canaan, Conn., Julie Skrabanek and husband, Gene, of Crowley; grandchildren, Summer and Luke Skrabanek and Alex Burgoyne; sister, Susan Girton; brothers, Jack Vollmer and wife, Sandra, Lee Vollmer and wife, Mary Helen, and Ray Vollmer; sisters-in-law, Dede Vollmer and Courtney Vollmer; brother-in-law, Don Dungan; and many loving nephews, nieces and cherished friends and colleagues.
