Leigh Ellen Waldon Hunter, 75, of Mansfield, TX, passed away June 23, 2017 at Community Hospice at Hughley in Burleson, TX. Born April 24, 1942 in Gurdon, AR, she was raised by her parents Mary and Bruce Waldon. Upon graduation from high school as Salutatorian, she completed her nurses training at the Warner Brown School of Nursing in El Dorado, AR. During her training to become an RN she served as a student nurse to her future husband, Dwight Hunter, at St. Joseph Hospital in Hot Springs, AR. They were married on August 9, 1963.
She moved with her family to Mansfield in 1974 where they have lived ever since. An active member of First Baptist Church she taught Kindergarten Sunday School for 20 years, started the Quilting Ministry, was involved in the Bereavement Ministry, regularly visited shut-ins at area nursing homes, but is most widely known as “the cake lady” as she made various cakes for the Welcoming Ministry for Sunday mornings. In her younger years she played softball, basketball, tennis and bowling. She enjoyed gardening, cooking, reading, and travel.
She is survived by her husband, Dwight of Mansfield, TX, three children, Cyndie Hunter of Mansfield, TX; Patrick Hunter (wife, Heather) of New Boston, TX; and Rachel Hunter Simmons (husband, Margene) of Mansfield, TX. Six grandchildren, Sarah Hunter, Hunter Simmons, Matthew Hunter, Aidan Simmons, Riley Simmons, and Abigail Hunter. Sisters, Tommye Billing of Arkansas; Johnnye Peacock of Alabama; Wava Stinnett and Kitty Waldon of Arkansas, as well as many nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews.
The Celebration of Life will be Monday, June 26 at 11:00am at First Baptist Church of Mansfield (1800 East Broad St) under the direction of Dr. Patrick Hunter and Rev. Don Miller. Visitation will precede the service from 9-11am. Interment will be Tuesday, June 27 at 4:00pm at Lowe Cemetery in Royal, AR.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Bereavement Ministry of First Baptist Church.
