Joyce Aileen Jones, 94, passed away on February 10, 2022 in Arlington Texas. Joyce was born in Arlington on June 7, 1927 to Elliott Connor Brewton and Tillie Mae Isbell.
She grew up, the youngest child in a large farming family. It has been told many times by her siblings that she was "Daddy's pet". If he would go to town and did not come home with candy, she would cry and carry on until he would go back to town for candy. Her sisters would sometimes play tricks on her, including one time they told her that eating rabbit pellets would make her beautiful.
Joyce assumed she would be an "old maid." A lady she worked with insisted on introducing Joyce to her nephew, Pierce Jones. They "took a liking" to one another and were married in 1955.They were married 61 years when Pierce passed away. She missed him terribly.
Joyce suffered many physical challenges over the years, including breast cancer, the treatment was terrible, but she did survive and lived another 23 years. She also fell and broke her hip. That is often the beginning of a downward spiral, but she bounced back from that also. One thing that was a constant hurt was the loss of her stillborn son, Charles Elliott, one year after she and Pierce married. She never recovered from that. It left her with a soft spot in her heart for children, especially babies. She made crib quilts and layettes for the pregnancy center. In her last few years, as her mind drifted, she sent way too much money to organizations that helped children. She was also very generous to police and firefighters organizations and to her church.
She was always busy. She gardened and tended her flowers. She kept a very clean house. She sewed. She was a very gentle and kind person, always sending cards and notes. She played the piano "by ear" and loved to play the piano her husband bought her. She was a poet and wrote poetry for many occasions including anniversaries, holidays, births and deaths. She subscribed to multiple magazines and the newspaper. She read her Bible every day, and ended every visit with "I'm praying for you."
Joyce was preceded in death by her parents. her husband, Pierce, of 66 years, son Charles, sisters Clara Adair, Lola Martin, Edna Brewton, Opal Tankersley, Addie Foster, and Orpha Crittenden. She was also preceded by brothers Alvin, Earl and Bernice Brewton.
She is survived by sister Effie (Sis) Foster, and many nieces and nephews, great nieces and nephews, and special friend Shauna Furtick McCullough .
