Joe Bob Parmley, a distinguished figure in both his personal and professional life, departed this world on March 8, 2025, in Mansfield, Texas. He was born on January 5, 1932, in Nat, Texas, and led an extraordinary life marked by dedication, service, and immense love.
For over 30 years, he committed himself to the oil industry at Sun Oil as a Research Enhance Oil Recovery specialist, a role that allowed him to travel extensively while contributing to advancements in oil extraction techniques. His brilliance as a self-taught scientist earned him the respect of his colleagues and peers. Beyond his professional accomplishments, he was known for his humor and warm personality, always able to lighten the mood and foster connections with those around him.
His life was also intertwined with a profound affection for his beloved wife, Dorothy "Dot" Wood. Their enduring love story began in their youth, and he affectionately referred to her as his "green-eyed Mississippi girl." Their bond was so strong that they maintained a tradition of love letters even while separated—a testament to their deep commitment and devotion to each other. His familial spirit extended to his younger siblings, whom he raised with care and responsibility, showcasing his nurturing nature from a young age.
An eight-year veteran of the United States Air Force, he served as a communications specialist, a role that further exemplified his dedication to service. This experience, along with his resourceful and inventive mind, shaped him into a well-rounded individual who thrived in a variety of environments.
In addition to his professional and military achievements, he found joy in nurturing life through his garden, particularly his passion for planting African Violets. His commitment to his community was evident through his longstanding attendance of over 50 years at First Baptist Richardson, where he built many cherished relationships.
His legacy lives on through his surviving family: his son Kenneth Parmley and his wife Joi; grandchildren Amanda Wu and her husband Lawrance, Sarah Hickey and her husband Chad, and Samuel Parmley and his wife Rachel; and great-grandchildren Eden Wu, Naomi Wu, Nathan Hickey, Clayton Hickey, and Norah Parmley. He is also survived by his siblings, Ellis Dean Parmley and Beverly Parmley Brewer, along with numerous extended family and friends who will remember him for his warmth and loving spirit.
He was predeceased by his devoted wife Dot Parmley; his father, Wyatt Parmley; his mother, Otha Parmley; his sibling, Billy Parmley; and his great-grandchild, Ezekiel Wu.
He will be remembered not only for his professional achievements and contributions but also for the love he embodied, the lives he touched, and the passionate spirit he brought to every endeavor. His remarkable journey continues to inspire those who were fortunate enough to know him.
