Jewel, affectionately known as “Scotty” by many friends and family, was born on October 1, 1922 in Childress, Texas to Shepherd Othelon Jones and Maggie Mae Green Jones and died at her daughter’s home on August 14, 2014 in Coppell, Texas surrounded by loved ones. On October 26, 1942 she married the love of her life, A.D. Scott, in Amarillo, Texas and they were married for 63 years before his death in 2006. It is a well-known fact that she met A.D. at age six and declared right then and there that she would marry him someday, and she did, shortly after high school graduation. Their marriage was blessed with two children.
Jewel was a homemaker, bookkeeper and volunteer extraordinaire, and described by others as warm, loving and gracious. In 1978 she was named Monahans, Texas’ “First Lady”, an honor bestowed upon her because of the love of life she radiated and her beauty of giving and sharing to all. She was known for always seeing the good in everyone. “Scotty” never refused to help others and through her devoted service to God, mankind and her community, she displayed a constant love of people and they loved her in return—for her modesty, her kindness, her enthusiasm, her joviality, her friendship, her hospitality and her gracious manner.
“Scotty” adored animals, both large and small, and had a unique connection with them. She almost always had a horse and was considered by many as the original “horse whisperer”. A favorite family story is when a duckling imprinted on Scotty as “mom”, following her everywhere, and would only get in the water after she led the way one cold morning into the family pond. Other feathered friends of Scotty’s included a white dove that landed daily on her shoulder, resulting in a featured story in the Fort Worth Star Telegram, along with numerous parakeets she tutored to speak fluent English. She was also an accomplished harmonica player and played and entertained others until just a few months ago.
She was a lifelong member of the Churches of Christ, most recently at the Rendon Church of Christ in Burleson, Texas and Jewel once wrote that “the greatest source of well-being and happiness comes from the Bible”. Jewel will be dearly missed by all who were privileged to know her. She is survived by her son, Don Scott and wife Margie; daughter Leigh Ann Scott Clifford and husband Ed; three grandchildren, Angie Scott Geisendorff and husband Ed; Maggie and James Clifford, and two great-grandchildren, Brandon and Donnie Geisendorff. She was preceded in death by her parents, six brothers and sisters and her beloved husband.
The family wishes to thank a special group of people who have been angels on earth as they compassionately cared for Jewel in amazing ways and supported each family member. They were Jewel’s caregivers who used their God-given gifts to love and care for her. Their gratitude is extended to Sandra Irby and others from “In Loving and Caring Hands”, the staff at PBH Residential Care Home/Keith Heights, and Vitas Hospice, for their sweet care of Jewel, and their gentle kindness and devotion to her.
Visitation will be Sunday, August 17, at 2:00 pm at Blessing Funeral Home, 401 Elm Street, Mansfield, Texas. Funeral services will follow immediately at 3:00 pm with Jim Antwine officiating. Burial will be Tuesday, August 19, at noon at Childress Cemetery in Childress, Texas.
