MANSFIELD -- Edna Maxine Rae Cowand, wife of 61 years to Dr. Keith P. Cowand, passed away in Arlington, Texas, on September 28, 2014, due to complications related to Alzheimer's.
Memorial service: A memorial service will be held on October 1, 2014 at 11:00 am at First United Methodist Church of Mansfield, Texas.
She was born in Coleman, Texas in a year that she notoriously preferred to keep confidential. She spent her childhood in Glenwood Springs, Colorado and, later, Sweet Home, Oregon, until moving to Seattle, Washington as a young adult, where she would become a legal secretary. In Seattle, she ultimately met Keith, who was stationed there in the Navy. They married in 1953, one week before Keith was deployed to duty in the Korean Conflict. In later years, the couple would move to Texas, where they both worked many years for the Dallas ISD and reared their daughters. Maxine loved taking care of her family more than anything else, and did it well--with tireless commitment and loyalty. She and Keith reared a future school teacher/language therapist and a lawyer/judge and taught them to aim high, work hard, always act and dress like ladies, and treat everyone with respect. She was a gentle but firm princess. She loved the Methodist church, traveling, shopping, keeping an immaculate household, and discussing all the issues of the day at the dinner table with her family.
Survivors: She is survived by her husband of Mansfield, Texas; two daughters, Cynthia Baltzley (husband Jeff) of Plano, Texas and Stacey Jernigan (husband Jack) of Southlake, Texas; and grandchildren John, Catherine, Hunter, and Jillian.
