Eddie Glen Thompson was born May 1, 1940 in Morton Texas, the youngest child of Eugene and Rosa Thompson. Ed had a twin brother, Fred, and a brother Wayne and a sister Alice.
As a child Ed worked on the family farm and had many fond memories of growing up in west Texas, which he loved to tell. His favorite being about how he had to move the irrigation pipe by hand through the fields which was very strenuous labor and very time consuming.
He graduated Morton High School in 1958 and was an all-sport athlete in basketball, football, baseball, and track. After high school he went on to McMurry College in Abilene on a football scholarship where he graduated in 1965 with a Bachelor of Science in Education. During his time at McMurry, he was involved in an airplane crash with his football team, while on a team trip to Louisiana during the 1963 season. Thankfully no one was injured when the plane crashed on a military base and was subsequently surrounded by armed soldiers until they realized what had happened.
After graduating he went to work for Union Carbide in Tennessee and worked there for many years. In 1966 he married Shirley Dean Runnells and they adopted two sons, Michael Glenn in 1971 and David Gene in 1973.
In the early 1990s Ed began to get involved in ministry and teaching in Texas. In 1996 he met Peggy Huffman at Ridglea Baptist Church in Fort Worth, Texas and they married in November of that year. Also, during 1996 Ed accepted a position as a football coach and history teacher at Copperas Cove Junior High, in Copperas Cove, Texas where they made their home until 2022.
During their tenure in Central Texas, Ed and Peggy were very active at North Pointe Church and in many Republican political events and causes. Including a stint as Coryell County Republican Chairman.
Ed enjoyed playing golf, coaching and watching football, traveling the world with Peggy, and photography, especially nature photography. Birds were one of his favorite photography subjects.
In 2022 Ed and Peggy moved to Mansfield to be closer to family. Peggy preceded Ed in death on May 29, 2024. Ed is survived by his sister Alice, sons Michael and David, several grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
