David Henry McGee IV, beloved husband, father-to-be, brother, uncle, and son, passed away on December 4, 2022, after a brief illness. David is remembered for his keen intelligence, his irreverent sense of humor, his uncanny ability to remember absolutely everything, and above all his loyal devotion to his family.
David was born in Monroe, Louisiana, the first son of the late David Henry McGee III and Laurie Pearson McGee of Mansfield, Texas. He grew up in Paw Paw, Michigan and Mansfield, Texas. As a boy David obsessed over comic books and video games and, like his 3 brothers, played lots of soccer.
After high school, David studied abroad for a year in Valencia, Spain through a Rotary Club program. As a result of this opportunity, he learned to speak Spanish and developed an awareness of how the world worked, expanding his horizons beyond his small hometown. David studied international business at Texas Tech in Lubbock, Texas and Anahuac University in Mexico City. It was there where he met the love of his life, Claudia.
David and Claudia were married on David's maternal grandparents' farm in Frisco, Texas on May 20, 2006. The couple made their home in Playa del Carmen, Mexico, where they owned and operated Riviera Art Gallery. Together they supported indigenous artists by representing their work in a manner that valued its cultural contribution and maintained high standards of quality. David and Claudia hosted frequent and sometimes unannounced visits from family members looking for a quick escape to the Riviera Maya. Sometimes those quick escapes lasted for several years.
In 2017, as they began to try to start a family, David and Claudia moved back to the United States: first to Buffalo, then to Orlando, Sacramento, and most recently Denver, where David had been promoted to a FInancial Specialist with the Small Business Administration. He was always up for an adventure and trying something new; geography was never an obstacle for David.
One of David's greatest joys in recent years was being an uncle to his nephew Diego and niece Charlie. Their happiness was his happiness. He was powerless to say “No” and would fulfill their any wish. David doubtlessly would have been the same with his own son.
David’s family and friends will remember him as intelligent, curious, clever, and committed: always endeavoring to understand the way the world worked, always analyzing things through his own unique prism, and always devoted to his family and friends. Moreover, he encouraged every single person in his life to be a better person.
David's loved ones know that he maintained his early interest in comic books. He was a huge fan of Marvel superhero movies and comics, particularly Captain America. Captain America was a former artist who was known for being honest, up-front, loyal, extremely noble, and unfailingly dependable. In many ways David resembled that superhero: a good citizen, a good example, a loyal friend, and very handsome.
David is survived by his wife Claudia, his mother Laurie, his brothers Charles and his husband Spencer, John, and Matthew and his wife Adriana, his nephew Diego, and his niece Charlie.
