Alice Winnell Powell

December 5, 1940 — December 4, 2014

Alice Winnell Powell was born and raised in Dallas, TX. Although her mother was harsh and strict, she adored her US Navy father, who had a successful career as a grocery man and toy shop owner after leaving the service. She loved visiting him in San Francisco, CA and came to love the place deeply. Alice attended Spence High School, North Dallas High School, and St. Paul Nursing School.
She met her first husband Bill Brand on a blind date and later married at age 18. They established their first home in San Francisco, California, but years later returned to a home in Bedford, Texas. Soon Alice gave birth to her only child, Michael. After years of happiness, the marriage ended in divorce after 10 years. Being a single mother in the 70’s was hard for Alice, but she persevered. She coped by expressing her creativity through her many arts and craft projects, and her compassion by rescuing a variety of animals over the years. She began work as a secretary and later became a buyer for Dallas Airmotive, now Aviall, Inc. Alice eventually met and married a kind man named George Brown. The new family moved to Ft. Lauderdale, FL for George’s airline work. Two years later, after she and George returned to Texas, George died of a brain tumor. In the mid ‘80’s Alice married an Aviall executive named Charles Powell and soon retired. She and Charlie settled first in Euless, TX, then later to a beautiful, rustic home on Lake Tawakoni, where she spent her time volunteering as a helper at Greenville Hospital, building a beautiful garden and koi pond, painting birdhouses, and enjoying fishing and lakeside country walks. Over the years Alice was a caregiver for her aunt Winnie, her mother-in-law Grace, and her husband Charlie. Following Charlie’s death in 2004, Alice’s own health began to decline, and after stays at other facilities, joined the family at Stoneybrook Assisted Living in Grapevine in December 2011.
Alice’s favorite things were her family, her pets, arts and crafts, reading, and southern cooking. She had a quick smile, a loving and generous heart, a wry sense of humor, and was loved by friends and family alike.
