Aleardo Ciampi Maffi passed away on May 12, 2017 after battling severe complications from a colonoscopy for two months.
He is survived by his wife, Shirley Maffi, and his extended family which include not only his biological children and immediate relatives, but also those of his heart whom he touched through his work, travels, and friendships.
Born in Livorno, Italy to Cesarina Giovanna Ciampi and Rolando Maffi, Aleardo began the early stretches of his life witnessing the dictatorship of Benito Mussolini which eventually forced him to move to Venezuela during World War II. There in Caracas, Venezuela, Aleardo forged a life that would lead him to study engineering at the Catholic University of Andres Bello. Soon after his graduation, he began work as a petroleum engineer in South America, working his way northwards to the United States where he would meet and marry the love of his life, Shirley Maffi. With her by his side, he continued to work as an engineer, earn a doctorate at the University of Oklahoma, and teach as he traveled the world imparting to many the tricks of his trade while simultaneously creating lasting relationships that molded his dedication to petroleum engineering into a calling.
When he was not on the oil field or the classrooms of budding engineers, he spent his time with friends and family, in the gym working out, and loving on his many dogs, his precious, special children. Though words may be brief, the quality time that he spent with those he loved and the passion he poured into them allows his laughter and loud voice to continue to reverberate amongst us all.
Aleardo was and is a man of the world. He leaves us not empty handed, but with a legacy of love, pride, and respect as he showed many how to love and conquer life. He will always be remembered as a father and mentor to many.
In lieu of flowers and in homage to his undying passion for animals, the family asks for donations to be made to the Humane Society of North Texas at
