MANSFIELD -- John Christopher Schmidt, 63, father, husband, story teller and family physician, died Wednesday, June 26, 2013. Memorial Service: 2 p.m. Friday, July 5 at Blessing Funeral Home. John was born May 25, 1950 in Beaumont, the son of Ruth and HM Schmidt. He graduated Forest Park High School in Beaumont in 1968. John played bass in popular regional bands The Britons and The Kids during the late 60's. He was a top rated Disk Jockey for several Top 40 radio stations in the Beaumont/ Port Arthur area 1966 to 1979 working under the name Todd Bishop. After graduating from Lamar University with a BA degree in Marketing in 1973, he worked briefly at The American National Bank of Beaumont. Dissatisfied, he then went to work for the Beaumont Police Department as a Uniformed Patrol Officer and Field Training Officer from 1974 to 1977. John completed his second degree at Lamar University a BS Pre-Med in 1979 and enrolled in Texas College of Osteopathic Medicine. He graduated Cum Laude 1983. Dr. Schmidt worked as a trusted Family Physician from 1984 until his death. Dr. Schmidt was preceded in death by his parents, Ruth and HM Schmidt. Survivors: He has one most cherished and loved daughter, Whitney Schmidt that he loved above all; one sister, Kathy (David) Colburn; Wife, Carol; three stepchildren: Ryon Sayer, Evan Sayer, and Carlyn Sayer.
